Visiting Yorkshire Sculpture Park

Writer: Danielle Powell Danielle Powell

Thursday 16th I visited Yorkshire Sculpture Park for the first time with university for a trip for my Art and Design History course. In the morning when we arrived we had a tour guide taking us around some of the sculptures in the park which was really interesting and insightful to hear more detail about the park and the sculptures. I really enjoyed walking around the park, all the sculptures were incredible. I created a short youtube video of clips around the park and put it together to share on my youtube channel, if you wanted to see the sculptures up close and on video.

Yorkshire Sculpture Park was the first Sculpture park made in the UK and is the largest of its kind in Europe. There is such a variety of sculptors work around the park with around 100 sculptures to see which is incredible. The area of the park is also stunning as you are surrounded by nature and the countryside.

Daniel Arsham

Multiple of Daniel Arsham's bronze sculptures are shown near each other in the sculpture park, including Bronze Extraterrestrial Bicycle (2022) which is located in the water, Bronze Eroded Bunny (2022) and the the three-metre tall Bronze Eroded Venus of Arles. The artist is retelling the ancient marble statue of Aphrodite from the 1st century BCE in their sculptures.

The photos below is titled Bronze Eroded Unearthed Melpomene, I think this one has to be my favourite sculpture, it is so beautiful and I love the details included.

The photo on the right is Bronze Eroded Bunny (2022) which was located near the other works of Daniel Arsham.

Robert Indiana

Robert Indiana, has many works located around the sculpture park, which you can not miss. The photo below is titled ONE through ZERO. The sculptures are 6-foot with ten numbers, and is located on the lawn outside the Underground Gallery. The numbers represent the stages of human life, from birth to death.

Before I visited the sculpture park I created some small artworks in a A6 sketchbook, one of the paintings I did was a watercolour piece of the AMOR sculpture. I really love this piece, it is really fun and works really well with other sculptures near by.

One of Indiana's most known sculptures is the LOVE sculpture. The LOVE sculpture was another favourite of mine, it was the first sculpture we saw when arriving at the park. The piece makes a strong statement in the park by its colour and size, I did not expect it to be so big.

Tom Friedman and Henry Moore

The image on the left, was another favourite of mine, this is a stainless steel sculpture by Tom Friedman titled Hazmat Love. I love the way it was positioned next to the water. The right sculpture is created by Henry Moore titled Large Two Forms and each angle viewing the sculpture, the shape changes which is really interesting.

Barbara Hepworth and Sophie Ryder

The left is a set of sculptures by Barbara Hepworth and shows nine sculptures that represents different stages of life and is a beautiful representation of a group of figures in a landscape.

The right is a sculpture created by Sophie Ryder titled Sitting. The sculpture is separated into two parts, one half human and the other half animal.

St Bartholomew's Chapel

Damien Hirst

On the left is Damien Hirst's sculpture titled The Virgin Mother, which was created in 2005-2006. I was shocked by how tall this sculpture was compared to the others in the park, as the sculpture is 10-meters tall.

Near the sculpture was a beautiful bridge with a waterfall, which I did not expect to see.

Leiko Ikemura and the views

The bottom right shows one of the views from the sculptures and the left is titled Usagi Kannon II by Leiko Ikemura. The sculpture with rabbit ears and a crying, human face acts as symbol of universal mourning, first created in 2011 in response to the Fukushima nuclear disaster in Japan.

Underground Gallery

As well as outdoor sculptures there was also an indoor exhibition, which had different displays including the images below. The sculptures below are the same as the LOVE red sculpture, which was located at the start of the park.
