A day in York 2022

Writer: Danielle Powell Danielle Powell

In August 2022 I visited York for the day, it was a city I've always wanted to visit. Throughout the day I visited many places and I loved everywhere so much. At the start of the day it was cloudy and rainy but as the day went on the sun came out and everywhere looked so different with the sun shining. In the morning we did everything that was inside which included going inside York Minister and visiting the gallery and museums.

York Minister

One of the first things we did when reaching York was walk around the outsides of York Minister and the gardens near by, it is such a stunning building. York Minster is one of the world's most magnificent cathedrals. The architecture of the cathedral is stunning and from different sides of the cathedral there is different designs like the images below.

Inside York Minister

After walking around the outside of York Minister we went inside, which was absolutely stunning. You could go underground and see more of the Minister. This is called the Undercroft museum which shows connections between the Minister and Viking York as well as seeing archaeological finds from across the centuries. This was shown through digital displays and artefacts from the cathedral's historic collection.

York Shambles

York shambles is a historic and popular street in York due to being so narrow and the timber framed buildings with cobblestone streets. The street was so interesting the way it is so narrow and the way the buildings were situated, it was such a pretty street too.

Clifford's Tower

Where Clifford's Tower is located is so interesting because its based on a hill next to a carpark and near by is the castle museum. I love the way it is built and kept after all the years it has been there as well as the stairs leading up to the door. I didn't get a chance to go inside the castle but this will be something that I would do next time.

York Castle Museum

When visiting Cliffords tower, we went to York Castle Museum, there was such a variety of displays on which takes you through different years. One of the exhibitions were the Kirkgate: The Victorian street which was really interesting to see as it was like going back in time, the set up was so realistic. There was also the York Castle prison which was crazy to see as it was the real prison cells that even had the wall engravings from past in-mates who stayed in the cells and there were video projectors sharing stories too.

JORVIK Viking Centre

JORVIK Viking Centre is a museum that gives you insight of the Viking age. There was a ride that showed you lifelike mannequins and sharing stories by taking you around the sights, sounds and smells of the Viking age in York. The ride was so creative, and a great way to understand the Viking age. There were also displays of a unique collection of 1,000 year old artefacts.

River Ouse

To finish the busy day in York, we had a walk near the River Ouse which was so relaxing. Everywhere in York is so beautiful, I cannot wait to come back again!

About Us

An overview of my work

I am a seascape artist from the U.K., creating acrylic paintings inspired by the ocean on canvas. I love the calmness of listening to the sea which reflects within my paintings. I capture the movements of the sea by taking photographs on beach walks and use the photos as reference. My work is on different scales, and I create hand painted products of my artwork on multiple items to sell on Etsy, Agift4theseasons.
