Liverpool Chinese New Year 2023 celebrations

Writer: Danielle Powell Danielle Powell

Liverpool's Chinese New Year 2023 celebrated the year of the Rabbit. Each year Liverpool provides a great event filled with activities and displays for people to enjoy. Liverpool is known for Europe's oldest Chinese community and has the second tallest Chinese Arch in the world, where attracts many visitors.

For the 2023 Chinese New Year celebrations of the Rabbit Liverpool's China town was filled with people who came to celebrate. It has become an annual celebration for people to gather around Chinatown to celebrate the Chinese New Year. The city had many celebrations happening; the traditional dragon, lion and unicorn parades and dances, firecracker displays, family workshops, Tai Chi demonstrations, art installations, a fairground, and food and craft stalls. Not only were China Town decorated for the celebrations the streets of Liverpool were decorated with Chinese Lanterns too.

Three rabbit lanterns were displayed near the Chinese Arch created by a local artist Becky Bryson.

The celebrations started with a parade around the city that led to China Town were further celebrations took place with dance performances on the main stage, firecrackers and dragon parades and dances. Many people gathered around the stage area to welcome in the New Year.

A rabbit installation was displayed on the grounds of the Bombed-out church, which shown a large rabbit in the middle and then smaller rabbis displayed on the ground.

The Bombed-out church was a centre of the Chinese New Year celebrations, the parade walked up the steps of the church for everyone to see, before heading to the main area where the celebrations took place at Chinatown.

The Chinese New Year celebrations in Liverpool is always an amazing event and every year there is always a great turnout. The event has something for everyone and each year there are new activities added. This is my fourth year of attending the Chinese New Year celebrations at Liverpool and it will not be my last.
