In December 2022 I visited Media city for the first time and during this visit the lightwaves event was taking place. The light event included many pieces of work around Salford Quays and MediaCity which was inspired by its surroundings, with a focus on technology, creativity and digital innovation. The event took place from Thursday 1st until Sunday 4th December.
There were multiple fire sculptures outside the Itv studios and the University of Salford. The sculptures were titled Fire Sculture Roost which was a series of three fire sculptures created by Walk The Plank. The three fire sculptures are giant lotus flowers that throw up flames that light up the night skies, the bird blows out fire as well as another light installation of an owl, where you could go in the area and light a candle.
The image below on the left is title THROUGH NO.4 by Liz West. This installation is a permanent installation at MediaCity and includes a six-metre long triangular corridor of light. As the image shows the light reflects on the floor in different colours and is such a beautiful installation.

This installation is titled End Over End created by Studio Vertigo. This piece is of a giant slinky, a toy that is very familiar and is both surrealistic and nostalgic. The slinky changed colour in each section, like it was tumbling over.

Inside the University of Salford there was an indoor installation titled MicroCosmic, designed by Paul Miller. The piece uses video, sound and projection to take viewers on a journey from the microscopic to the infinite vastness of the universe.

One of my favourite pieces from the event was Lightstream which was hidden away in a tunnel. This piece was created by FloLux (Flora Litchfield) and included light reflection on the water, which was absolutely stunning. Lightstream is an immersive laser light installation exploring human perceptions through spatial audio visual compositions. The photos below show the different colour of lights and reflections the installations made, the colours were so vibrant and the shadows created were stunning.

As well as the light show there were also Christmas markets by local businesses, which was such a good market and probably one of the best markets I've been to, all sellers were so talented. The light installations carried on to this area as shown by the heart disco ball which is just so stunning and was located in the centre of the stalls. The installation is titled Our beating Heart created by Studio Vertigo. The mirror ball created reflections on surfaces and could be seen from a distance.

On the left the photo shows an interactive light installation titled Norman by Monommatic. You cannot see clearly on the image as this piece you could only see clearly from certain angles but it is says new message from 'name'. The installation allowed viewers to write a text and it would show up on the screen, this was done through visitors scanning a QR code that took them to a website to add the message, which is really creative.
The image on the right is titled Butterfly cluster created by Anne Bennett and was created for the location on the Operations Tower in Salford Quays. When creating this piece Anne wanted to create an experience that was both dream-like and meaningful for people to enjoy.
